Sick N’ Beautiful: Intervista spaziale/An Interview from Outer Space

Con un groove travolgente e un'energia che non lascia scampo, gli italiani Sick N' Beautiful hanno appena stravolto l'Europa aprendo i concerti di band come Cradle of Filth e Lordi. Animali da palcoscenico dotati di una grande umiltà nel rapportarsi col pubblico: sono gli adorabili alieni della porta accanto. Ho avuto l'enorme piacere d'intervistarli; allacciate le cinture!

Com'è cominciata la vostra avventura?
Tutto è nato da un’esplosione… letteralmente. Siamo una band aliena atterrata su questo pianeta per portare caos, fuoco e metal. In realtà, il progetto è nato dall’incontro di menti malate con una passione in comune: unire musica, cinema e spettacolo in qualcosa di completamente fuori dagli schemi. E da lì, non ci siamo più fermati.

Ragazzi, ma ditemi onestamente: quanto è dura fare metal in Italia?
Fare metal in Italia è come costruire un’astronave con i pezzi di un motorino: possibile, ma devi essere molto testardo. Il pubblico c’è, la passione pure, ma spesso manca il supporto “ufficiale”. Noi abbiamo deciso di fregarcene, creare la nostra dimensione e portarcela in tour in giro per l’universo.

Com’è stato condividere il palco con una band come i Cradle of Filth?
Un’esperienza spaziale. Loro sono dei veri professionisti della scena, ma anche persone alla mano. Abbiamo imparato molto guardandoli da vicino, ma allo stesso tempo abbiamo capito che il nostro stile – così diverso – può coesistere perfettamente anche su palchi importanti. È stato uno di quei momenti che ti confermano di essere sulla strada giusta.

Che sensazione vi ha lasciato addosso il tour?
Un mix di adrenalina, gratitudine e voglia di ripartire subito. Ogni data è stata un piccolo film horror/sci-fi dal vivo, e il calore del pubblico ci ha ricaricati più di qualsiasi batteria aliena. È faticoso, certo, ma è lì che ti senti veramente vivo.

Quanto sono importanti gli effetti speciali nei vostri spettacoli? Vi sentireste a vostro agio anche senza?
Per noi gli effetti speciali sono una parte del racconto: fumo, laser, fuoco, luci, costumi… tutto serve a costruire l’universo Sick N’ Beautiful. Ma alla base c’è sempre la musica. Se ci togli tutto, rimane comunque l’energia, il sudore, e la voglia di scuotere chi ci ascolta. Siamo una bomba a orologeria anche senza effetti. Ma con… BOOM!

Herma, che ne pensi della questione “female fronted metal”? Ha senso di esistere questa definizione?
È una definizione vecchia, e un po’ limitante. Nessuno parla di “male fronted metal”. Se serve a dare visibilità, ok, ma ormai è ora di superare certe etichette. Io sono una frontwoman, sì, ma prima di tutto sono un’artista. E voglio essere giudicata per la mia voce, la mia presenza, e quello che porto sul palco – non per il mio genere.

Pensi che esista un problema di feticizzazione delle frontwoman all’interno dell’ambiente metal?
Sì, esiste. E spesso viene mascherato da “ammirazione”. Ma l’arte non è un pretesto per oggettificare. Noi giochiamo molto con l’estetica, col corpo, con la provocazione – ma è una scelta nostra, non un’imposizione. E soprattutto: chi guarda solo il corpo si perde metà dello spettacolo.

Ray, scrivi testi in cui i giochi di parole si mescolano alla provocazione, ma qual è il vero motore della tua ispirazione?
La realtà è più folle della fantascienza. L’ispirazione arriva dal mondo intorno a noi: alienazione, amore, rabbia, tecnologia, religione, sesso, potere. Il tutto filtrato attraverso l’occhio di un alieno che guarda la razza umana con un misto di stupore e ironia. Scrivere è come aprire un portale: non sai mai cosa ci trovi dall’altra parte.

Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci prossimamente dai Sick N Beautiful?
Il futuro ha un nome: Horror Vacui, il nostro nuovo album. È un viaggio nei lati oscuri dell’anima e del cosmo, dove ogni traccia è un grido contro il vuoto. Abbiamo messo dentro tutto: suoni più maturi, testi più taglienti e atmosfere che fanno esplodere la testa.
Abbiamo appena finito un tour pazzesco con i Lordi e ci portiamo a casa un’enorme carica – loro sono delle vere macchine da palco, e condividere quella dimensione con loro è stato un onore e una bomba di ispirazione. Ora siamo pronti a scatenare l’inferno anche da soli, in Italia e all’estero.
Aspettatevi spettacoli ancora più intensi, nuovi videoclip, nuove collaborazioni e qualche sorpresa… Tanto per non lasciare nessuno tranquillo.

An overwhelming groove and energy that does not take prisoners, the Italian band Sick N’ Beautiful just turned Europe upside down with their opening acts for bands such as Cradle of Filth and Lordi. Stage animals able to interact with fans with great humility: they are the most adorable next door aliens. I had the enormous pleasure of interviewing them; fasten your seatbelts!

How did your adventure start?
Everything was born from an explosion… literally. We’re an alien band landed on this planet to bring along chaos, fire and metal. Actually, the project was born from sick minds meeting through a common passion: putting together music, cinema and theater, obtaining something absolutely out of any scheme. Starting from there, we never stopped.

Guys, just tell me the truth: how hard is it to make metal music in Italy?
To make metal music in Italy is just like building a spacecraft using pieces from a scooter: possible, but you need to be extremely hardheaded. There’s an audience and there’s passion, but quite often the “official” support is missing. We decided not to give a shit about it, to create our own dimension and to carry it along the whole universe.

How did it feel to share the stage with a band such as Cradle of Filth?
It was legendary! They’re real professionals from the scene, but they’re very down to earth as well. We learned from them having the chance to look at them very close, but at the same time we understood that our style – so different from theirs – can perfectly coexist on important stages. It was one of those moments that make you understand that you’re on the right track.

What were you left with after the tour?
A mix of adrenaline, thankfulness and will to leave once more straight away. Every show was a mini live horror/sci-fi movie, and the warmth of the audience charged us more than any alien battery ever could. Sure, it’s tiring, but that’s when you truly feel alive.

How important are special effects in your shows? Would you feel comfortable without them?
To us special effects are part of the story we’re telling: smoke, lasers, fire, lights, costumes… everything is meant to built the Sick N’ Beautiful universe. But at the root of it all there’s always music. If you take everything away from us, there are still energy, sweat and the will to shake those who are listening. We’re a time bomb also without the fx. But with a… BOOM!

Herma, what do you think about the whole “female fronted metal” thing? Does it make sense for such a definition to exist?
It’s an old definition, and frankly a rather limiting one. Nobody talks about “male fronted metal”. If it’s useful to get some visibility it’s ok, but I’d say it’s about time to go beyond certain labels. I am a frontwoman, indeed, but first of all I’m an artist. And I demand to be judged based on my voice, on my presence, and on what I bring to the stage – not on my gender.

Do you think that there’s a problem with the fetishization of frontwomen within the metal scene?
Yes, it does exist. And it often wears the mask of “admiration”. But art is not a pretext to objectify. We play a lot with aesthetics, with the body and with provocations – but it’s our own choice, not something forced upon us. Most of all: those who look at the body exclusively miss half of the show.

Ray, you write lyrics in which word plays meet provocation, but what’s the true source of your inspiration?
Reality is way crazier than sci-fi. The inspiration comes from the world around us: alienation, love, rage, technology, religion, sex, power. Everything is filtered through the eyes of an alien looking at the human race with a mixture of amazement and irony. Writing is like opening a gate: you never know what you’ll find on the other side.

What should we expect from Sick N’ Beautiful in the next future?
The future has a name: Horror Vacui, our new album. It’s a journey through the dark sides of the soul and of the cosmos, in which every track is a cry against emptiness. We put it all in it: more mature sounds, sharper lyrics and atmospheres that will blow your head out.
We just completed an insane tour with Lordi and we bring back home an incredible amount of energy – they’re true stage machines, and sharing with them that dimension was a honor and an inspiration bomb. Now we’re ready to unleash hell even on our own, in Italy and abroad.
You should expect even more intense shows, new videos, new collaborations and a few surprises here and there… Just so that everybody needs to sleep with one eye open.
